Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) is a crystal that is commonly used as a Raman crystal in Raman spectroscopy. It is a colorless, transparent crystal that has a high Raman scattering efficiency and a broad Raman spectrum, making it suitable for a range of Raman applications.

Barium nitrate crystals are used as Raman scattering materials because they have strong Raman scattering at a number of different wavelengths. When a laser beam is directed onto the crystal, the photons in the laser beam interact with the crystal lattice, causing some of the photons to scatter in a different direction. The scattered photons have a different wavelength and energy than the incident photons, which creates a Raman spectrum.

Barium nitrate has a broad Raman spectrum that extends from the ultraviolet to the near infrared, making it useful for a range of applications. The crystal can be used as a reference material for Raman spectroscopy, as well as a sample for studying Raman scattering in the solid state.

In addition to its use as a Raman crystal, barium nitrate is also used in pyrotechnics, as a component of high-energy propellants, and as a flame retardant in plastics and other materials.
